If your household or business is similar to mine, then you have one dial-up
connection to be shared among several machines in your home or business. Of
course, the main reason for this is cost. The other advantages are:
Purchasing only one printer for the use of many Purchasing only one scanner
for the use of many Purchasing only one program(s) for the use of many A
disadvantage of this scenario is that shared bandwidth will slow your
connection considerably depending on how many shares you are running. I run
three. One is the "main" computer used for dial-up and as the "gateway" for
the other two computers I run to connect, using my main computer as the
gateway for the connection. All I need for this is a 4-Port Hub and a NIC
card in all three machines. If you have more or less than what I have, you'll
need the HUB and NIC cards accordingly. Yes, you can do this us... (more)
Have you ever received offers by mail, e-mail, or phone to the point you just
wanted to scream? I have. It got to the point where no matter what I received
I would set it aside for later. (Later being the next day or the next
Millennium). I appreciated receiving all the CDs and products for use, demo
and evaluation, however, at times.it became overwhelming. Due to this I
almost missed one of the most fantastic products I have ever used;
CrossTecCorp's "NetOp Remote Access".
My first encounter with NetOp was one of "Okay, when I get around to it I'll
load another program that pro... (more)
When "LinDows" first appeared I had signed up for the mailing notifications.
I kept hearing and reading about all the great things it would do. A Linux
operating system with the ability to run Windows programs. - in my mind this
was taking the best of both worlds and merging them. But there was secrecy
eveloped around this new OS, followed by brouhaha when MS filed an injuction
against this new upstart company.
I followed the story and developments for many months, and when nothing was
ever delivered as originally stated I became suspicous, downright paranoid,
that this was just... (more)
Those of us who have had the pleasure of buying MS products and wonder where
it will all end only to realize it's not going to end, consider this. I'm
going to illustrate from my own experience and pocket book what the cost
comparisons for Linux versus comparable MS products cost you and I.
I'm going to use retail prices quoted from retail outlets from the relevant
OS sites. Now realize this is meant to be an overview and there are
alternatives such as specials, copies of, educator discounts, etc., however,
I am using an across-the- board cost comparison for the retail versions. I... (more)
In a previous article I wrote entitled: "Trial & Error: Mandrake
Installation" I described the various events I encountered during my attempt
to load Mandrake Linux 8.1 on my Main Box, which had Windows 2000
Professional loaded previously. Everything was fine with the exception of
Mandrake Linux recognizing my Modem and Sound Card. Several Mandrake users
had written me to explain to me where I can find the resolve to the
particular problems I had encountered in my installation. I thanked them and
yes, the resolves were stated by the Mandrake installation procedure as well.
What... (more)
